A hardware company that starts with optics
ORBITAL was founded in Hong Kong in 2019 by optical engineers and industrial designers who were tired of treating headsets as screens with a strap. We design our optics, our tracking and our haptics in-house, then manufacture in the Greater Bay Area with partners we audit ourselves.
Small enough to care, equipped enough to deliver
We are a team of optical engineers, firmware developers, industrial designers and production engineers working out of Hong Kong, with a prototype shop and a pilot line a short drive away in Shenzhen. That proximity is deliberate: an optical change can go from a bench measurement to a physical sample in days, not quarters.
We sell directly to organisations that deploy devices, and through distributors in markets where local support matters more than a lower landed price. We do not white-label other people's headsets, and we publish the specifications of what we actually ship.
- Optical, tracking, haptics and reliability labs in Hong Kong
- Prototype shop and pilot line in Shenzhen
- Audited mass-production partners across the Greater Bay Area
- Direct sales for deployments, distribution for retail markets
How we got here
No pivots, no rebrands — just a slow accumulation of optical and tracking capability.
Founded in Hong Kong
Four founders, one optical bench and a borrowed anechoic room, working on folded optical paths for compact headsets.
First working prototype
The first Vision prototype demonstrated readable 10-point text in a headset under 450 g, which set the weight budget we still hold to.
Pilot production
Vision X1 entered pilot production with an end-of-line optical test station, and our quality system was certified to ISO 9001.
Enterprise and lightweight
Vision X1 Pro added depth capture and hot-swap power; Aero brought our optics down to 78 g of glasses.
Shared spaces
Glide controllers and the Nexus C1 hub turned single-headset demos into multi-user rooms driven by one machine.
Twenty-six markets
Distributor and deployment coverage across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
What we do in-house
Four labs, four disciplines. Everything that decides how a headset feels and measures is ours.
Optics lab
MTF measurement, ghost-image analysis, stray-light and uniformity testing across the full field of view.
Tracking lab
A motion rig with ground-truth reference for SLAM accuracy, relocalisation time and hand-tracking jitter.
Haptics bench
Laser vibrometry and a calibrated force rig to characterise actuator response against our render pipeline.
Reliability lab
Drop, tumble, thermal shock, humidity and wear simulation, plus accelerated wipe-down testing of facial interfaces.
Paperwork that stands up to an audit
Enterprise and healthcare buyers audit their suppliers. Here is the documentation we keep ready.
Certifications
- CE, FCC and UKCA marking for the full device line-up
- IEC 62471 photobiological safety assessment for every display
- IEC 62368-1 for hubs and power accessories
- IEC 60601-1-2 EMC documentation available for clinical configurations
Quality system
- ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management
- Serial-numbered test records for optical and tracking calibration
- Traceable bill of materials and supplier audit reports
- RoHS and REACH declarations for every part number
